When I was 11 I inherited a broken camera from my godfather but it was a long time before I could start clicking away at life.
I qualified as a clinical psychologist – from 1992 I worked as a psychologist at Johannesburg prison. My interest was also with visual things and and I enrolled at the Market Photo Workshop at the Market Theatre under David Goldblatt and T.J. Lemon for training in documentary photography. This experience changed my life.
The surprise of finding what things and people will look like photographed gave me a thrill. In 1996 I started photography as a full-time career and am now based in Oudtshoorn, in the Little Karoo on the edge of the Garden Route. I like travelling so I go wherever the work is. (I’ve done photographic work in each of South Africa’s 11 provinces).
I’m not a fan of the ‘stylized look’ and believe in using that which is available at that moment in time. The relationship that develops during wedding photography is important for me and I take my best photos when interacting in a playful and light-hearted manner.
